POETRY | JUNE 2020
I've recently really become interested in poetry and the way those few words can change a mindset. I really enjoy reading prose and a lot of online poetry which I find on Instagram and Pinterest. The poetry collections I have a hard copy are is 2 out of the 3 Pillow Thoughts poetry books by Courtney Peppernell. I think these poetry collection especially, for younger people really speak to the soul. Especially when the poetry is separated in to different sections, such as 'if you are heartbroken', 'if you are in love' and 'if you need a reason to stay'. After quite a stressful and hard start to the year, I turned to poetry to help me move on and get myself together. I have number 1 and three in the collection, and genuinely every single poem speaks to me in different ways, and they are 100% all relative. For whatever mood and situation you are going through, the words of Peppernell will transform your mindset.
'Stop acting like you aren't enough. You're strong and beautiful
and the way you dress or who you like doesn't change how big your heart is.
You are important, and your hair looks nice, and so do your
eyes,
and the way you eat half a tub of ice cream is sexy as hell.
You are not nothing, and you can achieve anything, and you are believed in.
You are someone worth having around and whoever has you now,
or will have you, is a lucky one too.
Why do people tell others what they deserve but never themselves?
Stop acting like you aren't enough, because you are.' (p,188) Pillow Thoughts.
The next poet that I have been loving is Nikita Gill, who I first found Instagram. I follow a lot of poetry-esque accounts because I think spontaneous poems found on your feed can really uplift you. Wild Embers, and Your Heart is the Sea are the poetry collections I have, and literally every single page is relatable and filled with something that will make you realise that whatever you are going through now, you can get to the other side of it. A lot of Nikita Gill's poetry centres on a theme, Wild Embers concentrates on poems of rebellion and mainly female empowerment. However, Your Heart is the Sea is about mending your wounds and moving on.
Unlearning
'Womanhood
is rich with unlearning,
How to unlearn the way you hate your body,
how to rebuild your spirit
after the supernova of love
finally bursts,
how to understand that
there are a million
new versions of you,
hiding under your skin.
How each one is born
from suffering agonisingly,
unlearning what others
want you and your body to be,
finding moments
and seconds by metaphors
in everything
that makes you feel good
make you feel
how you are supposed
to feel.
Reiterating them
till there is finally understanding
and accepting,
inside your very soul
the only thing that truly matters
is how often you say
on your journey,
"This, all of this, is for me" ' (p.16) Wild Embers.
Even though I think social media has a lot to answer for for mental health problems, especially in young people. I think that you can also frame your feed with positivity and words that are going to improve your mental health. You can access a lot of self-empowerment and self-love on Instagram, Twitter, Pinterest and Tumblr. I love actually owning a physical copy of those poems that I know will help me. Tagged below will be some of my favourite poets that I have found on social media.
