MY TBR JUNE 2020

The thing I've loved the most about lockdown, is that I've finally got enough time to read the books on my TBR. I've already read a few in April, but I'm hoping with a lot of my Uni work out of the way, I can focus on the unread books on my bookshelf. I've been buying a few books, because I just can't help myself sometimes. So, currently I am reading Normal People by Sally Rooney. I've read Conversations with Friends by Rooney before and I loved it. The BBC Three adaptation of the novel has just been released and it is so amazing; I was surprised how similar it is to the novel, and the level of intimacy in the drama that made it so authentic and perfect in a way. I've read most of the book in 2 days, so you can probably tell that I am really enjoying the book.

The next book I want to get to this month is The Hate You Give by Angie Thomas. I actually watched the film before getting the book, and as you know the book is always better than the film. I was so moved and touched by the film that I really wanted to read more black literature and YA novels that incorporate the experiences of black communities and individuals. I think the film highlights even more the racism and injustice that black communities face in America which is powerful, and the character of Starr really represents the difficulty the state gives the black demographic of America, and how the dynamics of racism is embedded with society still.

Alone in Berlin by Hans Fallada has been on my TBR for a good few months now. I think I received it as a gift from my Mum, and still haven't gotten round to reading it. As historical fiction is my favourite genre, I am really looking forward to getting in to it, but I want to finish my University work first beforehand. I watched the film a few years ago, and really enjoyed it. I love historical fiction that is set in WWI or WWII, but set in a European country. For example Sebastian Faulks' book Birdsong and Charlotte Gray are set in France, and I loved it. I loved the French culture and mix of characters entwined in to the novel. This novel is set in war time Berlin, focusing on the Nazi propaganda and ideological manipulation of the state.

I am also currently reading The Secret Scripture by Sebastian Barry. I have only very recently come across this author and I love that this novel is set in Ireland. I really enjoy the culture and the dialogue of Ireland, and the big characters because I just feel like they have a real, raw story to tell. There's a lot of mysteriousness to those characters, which I think I attach to the history of Ireland; the famine and the religious divide is very fascinating to me.

Another book I want to get to in June is Beloved by Toni Morrison. I've always wanted to read one of Morrison's novels. Beloved is probably the best known novel of hers, and I really enjoy reading historical texts also because you can really sit within the shoes of the protaganists and feel their persecution and situation.

I probably won't get to all of these in June, but I will try my very hardest :)

Happy Reading!
