JULY WRAP UP & AUGUST TBR | JULY 2018

The first book I read in July was Demelza; the second book in the Poldark series. I really enjoyed it, and I really enjoy historical fiction and the series. I got in to Poldark through the TV series, and I honestly believe that every book is better than the TV programme/film that has been created from it. The books are better, and I do want to carry on reading the series. I don't think there's many series that are set in Cornwall, during that time, so it's very unique with all the plots that happen in that time, and it remains relevant in this time as well.

The next book was Twelve Bar Blues by Patrick Neate. I LOVED this book. The plot focuses around the music of jazz, and the roots of where you're from. There was brutality from racism and the heartbreak of family being torn apart by death and betrayal. It's written in the structure of the twelve bar blues, and contains African myth and legend, as well as the historical journey of Africans around the world. If you liked Underground Railroad by Colson Whitehead, I think you would enjoy this, except it's got a different structure and struggle between the characters.

There's a difference with genre with the next book, 'It only happens in the movies' by Holly Bourne was a book I just couldn't finish. I got really bored by the characters and plot, it just went on and on and nothing really happened. I think I got about 150 pages in, and had to DNF it.

The Island by Victoria Hislop is set on the Greek Island of Crete, and partly on Spinalonga. It follows the character of Alexis, her character comes across as if she's lost with her life and the direction she's taking. Her mother is from a tiny town/village called Plaka on the Cretan island. Spinalonga in the thirties/forties was a leper colony. It's about the heartbreak, abandonment and community that Plaka offered, as well as what Spinalonga offered. It's essentially a story of Alexis learning about where her mother came from, and what she went through as a child, and what her whole family went through. I didn't enjoy the writing style, but the characters were brought together by their loyalty for each other.

My August TBR started with Noonday by Pat Barker. I've heard a lot about her Regeneration series and I'm currently reading it, and enjoying it. As I've probably said before, historical fiction is my favourite, especially if it's set in either World War.

Some other books I hope to read is The Heart of Midlothian by Sir Walter Scott. I really want to read more Scottish Literature, because since I visited Scotland I've fallen more in love with the country. Northanger Abbey by Jane Austen, I've only really read one other Jane Austen novel and I didn't get on with it at all, but let's hope I get on with this one, and The Turn of the Screw by Henry James. These couple of books I've mentioned are suggested reading for University, and I like to be organised! There may be a few more I get to read as well, but I'll update you all on those in next months reading update!

Happy Reading!
