KOS TRAVEL DIARY | JULY 2017
KOS | JULY 2017
This was a last minute holiday, neither of my family had really explored the Greek Islands, so we decided to go. We didn't really know what to expect, but the beauty of the island and the friendliness of the people created one the greatest holidays. We arrived at the end of a heatwave, where it was around 44 degrees celsius (not a good suit for us Brits). My first impressions of the island was the beautiful view of Turkey, across the Aegean Sea, and the sunset. WOW. I absolutely LOVE a sunset and this is the best one I've seen, the sky turns the most beautiful pink and orange colour; a picturesque scene, YOU NEED TO SEE IT.
Since as a family we'd only really gone to Spain and the Canary Islands, it was a very different culture to what I'm used, and it was nice to go out of my comfort zone, and adapting to the surroundings that I'm not used to. The varied diet of gyros to tzatziki was wonderful, even though the first night we ate pizza and chicken wings. One of the days we were there we went on a boat trip, which I recommend to go down to the marina and browse the different boat tours available to you. We went on the boat; Katarina, which was a three island boat tour from 10 am to 6pm, only if the weather is right, luckily the morning we were due to go on the excursion the weather was just right. We only visited two islands that day but had a chance to swim in the sea on two occasions, in small little coves along the way. We visited the island of sponges; Kalymnos. The coastline was full of bars, shops and restaurants, with little alleyways which reminded me of Italy or Barcelona. It was almost 40 degrees celsius there though, so we were sweating through our clothes. We also had lunch on the island, all included in the price, it was amazing and the people were very friendly.
The island that was available to swim around was Platy, a very small cove with turquoise coloured water with the glittering sunlight upon them was beautiful. The water was cold, but it made up for the rising temperature of the sun. I'd definitely recommend going on a boat trip to explore the other islands surrounding Kos and even Kos itself, I've heard Kardamena is very nice.
We mainly sunbathed and relaxed for most of the holiday, we stayed in the Irene Apartments in Psalidi. It was a quieter area, which suited me so well. There was a lovely amount of tavernas on the seafront, which you could watch the gorgeous sunset and sit by the sea whilst having your food. Greek people are extremely friendly, and the culture intrigued me, especially when visiting Kos Town. Kos is the home of Hippocrates; father of medicine, seeing Hippocrates' Tree and the surrounding areas of beautiful purple and pink flowers covering the walls was beautiful. This holiday was beautiful and relaxing, seeing the view of Turkey over the sea and the boat trip, full of exploration.
If you haven't explored or thought of the Greek Islands as an option for a holiday destination; you won't regret it if you decide to. From the food, people, views and culture, it is AMAZING, I hope to go back and explore other Greek Islands.
